Inflammation is how the body answers injury and infection. When it does not switch off it becomes the disease itself: the swollen joint in arthritis, the ulcerated bowel in colitis. The drugs that suppress it work, and they are also why patients bleed from the stomach, injure their kidneys and heal badly. One of the things laboratories are testing instead is the metal nanoparticle. Particles of silver, gold, zinc oxide or cerium oxide, tens of nanometres across and often made using plant extracts, reduce swelling and inflammatory signalling in animals given an inflammatory disease deliberately. This idea is still being tested. Here the particle is the drug rather than a carrier for one, so its size, surface charge and coating ought to decide what it does, and a striking number of papers report none of the three. What exists is small laboratory studies from many separate groups, each with its own particles and its own animal model, and nobody has read them together. This project does that, and works out what can honestly be concluded from them.
Read up on inflammation and on how metal nanoparticles are made and tested. Take one part of the animal literature, read the papers for it, build the table that goes with it, and write that section of the review.
