Dental implants can sit in healthy tissue, in inflamed tissue that will recover, or in inflammation that is quietly eating away the bone holding the implant in. The first two are peri-implant health and mucositis. The third is peri-implantitis, and by the time it is obvious on an X-ray the bone has already gone. Telling them apart earlier would change what a dentist does about it. The hope is that the fluid around the implant carries the answer: proteins released by inflamed tissue, measurable from a sample taken with a paper strip in a few seconds, or from saliva. Plenty of groups have gone looking. They used different methods, compared different groups, and published one protein list at a time, so what exists is a scattering of candidates rather than anything a clinic could use. This project collects those studies and works out which proteins come up more than once, in which sample, measured how, and whether anybody ever went back and repeated the result. Telling whether two papers actually found the same thing is most of the job.
