Orthodontic treatment that works with a child's growth has to be timed to it, and the growth spurt is not the same thing as the birthday. The traditional way to judge it is a hand-wrist radiograph, read for how far the small bones have matured. That means an extra film of a body part with nothing wrong with it, taken purely for timing. The cephalogram already taken for the orthodontic assessment happens to include the top of the neck, and the cervical vertebrae change shape with maturity too. If they can be staged reliably, the hand-wrist film is unnecessary. Studies comparing the two are numerous, and most report how closely the two measures track each other, which is not the same as whether a particular child is put in the right group. This project asks the clinical question instead: how often does the neck get it right, and how often does it get it wrong? The work is reading, pulling counts out of tables, and the statistics that turn those counts into a sensitivity and a specificity an orthodontist can weigh against an extra film.
