Lipoprotein(a) is a particle in the blood that raises the risk of heart attack and stroke, is set almost entirely by the genes you are born with, and barely moves with diet or exercise. Guidelines now say to measure it once in a lifetime, and drugs designed to lower it are in late-stage trials. So the number matters. The catch is that the number depends on which laboratory produced it. The particle varies in size between people, some assays are sensitive to that and some are not, results come back in two different units, and calibration differs between manufacturers. One sample sent to two laboratories can return two different values, and the cardiologist decides from whichever one arrives. This project works out how far apart they really are, by collecting the studies that ran these assays against each other and pulling out every measure of agreement they report. It is laboratory medicine done at a desk rather than at a bench, and it finishes with a manuscript submitted.
