Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic disease of the lining of the mouth, caused mostly by chewing areca nut, and it is common across South and Southeast Asia. The tissue slowly stiffens and scars until opening the mouth becomes difficult, and in some patients it eventually turns into oral cancer. Why some progress and others never do is not understood. One idea under investigation is epithelial-mesenchymal transition, the process in which an ordinary lining cell lets go of its neighbours and takes on the mobile, invasive behaviour of a cancer cell. Researchers have measured a long list of proteins said to mark that switch, in tissue, in cultured cells and in saliva, using different methods and different comparison groups, one study at a time. What exists is a pile of separate results rather than an answer. This project puts them side by side and works out which markers are reported consistently, in which direction, and how much of the disagreement comes down to how they were measured. It is reading and tabulating; the marker table is the part of the paper that will be cited.
